		<title>Juicing is not an extreme sport</title>

First I bought <a href="http://crazysexylife.com/about/" target="_blank">the book</a>. It sat on my bedside table for a few months. Then I practically devoured it… I was committed! I purchased <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Green-Power-Juicer-Model-Warranty/dp/B001MXSUAQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1317005181&amp;sr=8-2" target="_blank">the juicer</a> (after conferring w/ several friends about exactly which model is the best). It sat in its box for weeks, next to my desk so I could guiltily skulk past it several times a day.</p>
<p>I recently heard the author of the book (Kris Carr’s <a href="http://crazysexylife.com/about/" target="_blank">Crazy Sexy Diet</a> – in case you don’t regularly read my posts where I seem to refer to her often) say in an <a href="http://www.tinapruitt.com/blog/kris-carr-tina-pruitt-interview-what-would-you-changeadd/" target="_blank">interview</a> “The first, most important thing you should change is your mind.” So true. I was convinced it was going to be really difficult, and that I just wasn’t cut out for it. That the juicing lifestyle was for people better looking, younger, hipper, smarter, more committed than me. These were the ‘green Olympians’ in my head, on a pedestal, and I am no athlete.</p>
<p>Finally this summer I identified a stretch of time to begin my marathon training in earnest (I’m not being literal, you know).  I blocked my calendar, nervously worked my way through the produce aisle, watched the juicer instruction video, and began. Honestly, the first several days were hellish. I was very grouchy. But dammit, I was going to do it – 21 days of vegan foods and green juicing and change my life once and for all! On the 13<sup>th</sup> day I bought a rainbow trout with the head and tail still attached. It was the most incredible thing I’d eaten in a long time. There was something primal about the way I sucked on those fish bones. Yum.</p>
<p>Was this a failure? No. Once again I realized my tendency to overdo it – to go full throttle for the opposite of whatever I’m doing now in order to affect what I think will be a healthy and lasting change. It seems that my inner drill sergeant has to kick the ass of the cute resistant one to get me to change my pattern. But here is where I get to change <strong><em>my mind</em></strong> about how things went down. Today I am not a 100% convert. I still enjoy a local organic grass-fed beef burger and chocolate milkshake every now and then. <strong><em>And…</em></strong> I have in fact created lasting change as a result of my 13-day foray into the juicing/vegan lifestyle. Three months later I continue to begin 95% of my days with hot water and lemon, then green juice before noon. I absolutely LOVE green juice. I even love how long it takes to make it. A friend mentioned it’s a Zen practice and I’m glad she said that so I could be less pissed off that it takes forever! Now I sink into the repetitive motion of feeding the greens through the tube, pouring the rich green fluid into my sparkling mason jar, enjoying every moment. I’ve ventured into recipes that always seemed unreachable before. I’m less daunted by the bulk bins in the food co-op. I found joy in cooking for my family again. I had a chance to notice my pattern of numbing out with food and found new ways to infuse my life with pleasure.</p>
<p>Juicing, and healthy eating – it turns out &#8211; is not an extreme sport. It’s available to anyone willing to change their mind, overcome their resistance (gently), and enjoy the simple pleasures in  everyday actions of nourishing their body.</p>

Love the double entendre. ME is the abbreviation for the state of Maine, if you know me at all &#8211; you know that I heart Maine. &#8216;I love myself&#8217; is quite possibly the healthiest attitude when put into practice and shared for others to both experience &amp; emulate. So I picked up a bunch to share with my <strong>Vibrant Ones posse</strong> who joined me for the <a href="http://www.teamnorthrup.com/">Team Northrup</a> gathering up north. And today it&#8217;s been fun to see all the <a href="http://www.facebook.com/bewellvibrantone">Facebook</a> posts and blogs highlighting the same idea. <span style="color: #ff0000;"><strong>Let&#8217;s love ourselves!</strong></span> Whomever taught us that to do so was wrongly self-serving was simply passing along the information they received, so we can love them too&#8230; and show &#8216;em how it&#8217;s done.</p>
<p>If you don&#8217;t already practice loving yourself, getting started can be challenging. As my Valentine to you, here are some tips &amp; resources for getting started:</p>

		<title>Twelve Days of Eating</title>

		<description><![CDATA[I am lolling about in the week between Christmas and New Year's Day. The scene: kids and Joe are in the house. It is rather messy. None of us have bathed for a couple days (since visitors left) and we're wearing odd assortments of dirty PJ's and walking clothes. Yes, that's right - I DID actually leave the house this morning for a brisk walk with Joe. My body couldn't take it any longer... 'Get... UP.... Get... OUT... M.O.V.E. your BODY.... NOW!'  You see... during the holidays I typically gorge myself on an assortment of traditional German breads &#038; cookies I learned to bake from my mother and have been enjoying for, well, 41 Christmasses now. To me the taste of almonds, butter, sugar and candied fruit is part of the holiday I savor most.

Now I'm sure NOBODY else can relate, right??? Before we commiserate, however, I invite you to cut yourself some slack. Whether you enjoy food during the Holidays because of family tradition, emotional eating, stuffing feelings, or even general merriment, it's OK! I am no expert on eating disorders or any disorder for that matter. But I AM an expert in my own self-criticism and general loathing related to food, eating, and body image. I've loathed myself so well for so many different reasons... and I'm over it finally. I'm practicing self-approval now, and I would enjoy your company along this new trajectory.

The last of the fruit stollen was consumed this morning (after the walk)... and it was scrumptious! There are still tupperware bins full of chocolate, spritz, lebkuchen, and spekalatius ~ a huge plate of these are accompanying us to our friend's 'Not-Yet-New-Year's-Eve' party tonight. That leaves chocolate coins which I don't really love anyway, and the tiny Toblerone which Santa forgot I prefer milk chocolate to the dark chocolate variety... so I think things are looking up for my slow-moving, somewhat rounder, and did I say ADORABLE body.]]></description>

<p>I&#8217;m returning to my healthy pink shake for breakfast, walking/nia/or workout every morning, and will be re-setting my sugar cravings along with many others across the U.S. the week of January 11. Each year after the Holidays I enjoy the RESET program which brings balance back into my diet, allows the cravings to subside and healthier urges to resume. Because I am committed to being healthier, more trim, and fit in the New Year; and I also know that the 2010 Holidays  will include joyful baking and sharing sweet traditions with loved ones yet again; I am grateful to include in my tradition full enjoyment, gradual decrease, and this effective and pleasurable program for easing myself off sugars &amp; carbs and back into my routine.</p>

			<a href="http://www.shareaholic.com/api/share/?title=Twelve+Days+of+Eating&amp;link=http://vibrantone.com/2009/12/twelve-days-of-eating/&amp;notes=I%20am%20lolling%20about%20in%20the%20week%20between%20Christmas%20and%20New%20Year%27s%20Day.%20The%20scene%3A%20kids%20and%20Joe%20are%20in%20the%20house.%20It%20is%20rather%20messy.%20None%20of%20us%20have%20bathed%20for%20a%20couple%20days%20%28since%20visitors%20left%29%20and%20we%27re%20wearing%20odd%20assortments%20of%20dirty%20PJ%27s%20and%20walking%20clothes.%20Yes%2C%20that%27s%20right%20-%20I%20DID%20actually%20leave%20the%20house%20this%20morning%20for%20a%20brisk%20walk%20with%20Joe.%20My%20body%20couldn%27t%20take%20it%20any%20longer...%20%27Get...%20UP....%20Get...%20OUT...%20M.O.V.E.%20your%20BODY....%20NOW%21%27%20%20You%20see...%20during%20the%20holidays%20I%20typically%20gorge%20myself%20on%20an%20assortment%20of%20traditional%20German%20breads%20%26%20cookies%20I%20learned%20to%20bake%20from%20my%20mother%20and%20have%20been%20enjoying%20for%2C%20well%2C%2041%20Christmasses%20now.%20To%20me%20the%20taste%20of%20almonds%2C%20butter%2C%20sugar%20and%20candied%20fruit%20is%20part%20of%20the%20holiday%20I%20savor%20most.%0D%0A%0D%0ANow%20I%27m%20sure%20NOBODY%20else%20can%20relate%2C%20right%3F%3F%3F%20Before%20we%20commiserate%2C%20however%2C%20I%20invite%20you%20to%20cut%20yourself%20some%20slack.%20Whether%20you%20enjoy%20food%20during%20the%20Holidays%20because%20of%20family%20tradition%2C%20emotional%20eating%2C%20stuffing%20feelings%2C%20or%20even%20general%20merriment%2C%20it%27s%20OK%21%20I%20am%20no%20expert%20on%20eating%20disorders%20or%20any%20disorder%20for%20that%20matter.%20But%20I%20AM%20an%20expert%20in%20my%20own%20self-criticism%20and%20general%20loathing%20related%20to%20food%2C%20eating%2C%20and%20body%20image.%20I%27ve%20loathed%20myself%20so%20well%20for%20so%20many%20different%20reasons...%20and%20I%27m%20over%20it%20finally.%20I%27m%20practicing%20self-approval%20now%2C%20and%20I%20would%20enjoy%20your%20company%20along%20this%20new%20trajectory.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe%20last%20of%20the%20fruit%20stollen%20was%20consumed%20this%20morning%20%28after%20the%20walk%29...%20and%20it%20was%20scrumptious%21%20There%20are%20still%20tupperware%20bins%20full%20of%20chocolate%2C%20spritz%2C%20lebkuchen%2C%20and%20spekalatius%20%7E%20a%20huge%20plate%20of%20these%20are%20accompanying%20us%20to%20our%20friend%27s%20%27Not-Yet-New-Year%27s-Eve%27%20party%20tonight.%20That%20leaves%20chocolate%20coins%20which%20I%20don%27t%20really%20love%20anyway%2C%20and%20the%20tiny%20Toblerone%20which%20Santa%20forgot%20I%20prefer%20milk%20chocolate%20to%20the%20dark%20chocolate%20variety...%20so%20I%20think%20things%20are%20looking%20up%20for%20my%20slow-moving%2C%20somewhat%20rounder%2C%20and%20did%20I%20say%20ADORABLE%20body.&amp;short_link=&amp;shortener=none&amp;shortener_key=&amp;v=1&amp;apitype=1&amp;apikey=8afa39428933be41f8afdb8ea21a495c&amp;source=Shareaholic&amp;template=&amp;service=40&amp;tags=&amp;ctype=" rel="nofollow" class="external" title="Share this on Reddit">Share this on Reddit</a>
